Living with New Guinea Singing Dogs

If you are interested in having a New Guinea Singing Dog (NGSD) join your household, please read this section and the attached links before you purchase and/or adopt one.

NGSD respond well to gentle human contact and become very attached to their human families. They are not known to be aggressive to humans, only shy and/or discriminating. People seeking an extroverted dog who wants to meet every other dog and human should look elsewhere. That still leaves a lot of other people, a small number of whom will instantly feel kinship with this independent, intelligent, inquisitive dog. While they may be reserved or aloof with strangers, they do not hold back on affection with people they know and like, often lavishing cheek rubs and kisses on them.

Although charming and affectionate with their human families, NGSD--as with any "breed"--may or may not fit well with your personality or lifestyle. Also as with many "breeds", rescue situations continue to plague the efforts of conscientious champions of the NGSD. Please carefully evaluate your own personality before choosing any type of dog.

The NGSDCS selects potential homes through a series of detailed written applications and phone or in-person interviews. Prospective adopters may also be asked to supply photos or video of their fencing or pen. Contributing observations of behavior and participating in studies are encouraged, to help us better understand NGSD.

Once a new NGSD home is established, the organization supports the new family by providing advice as necessary. This support continues indefinitely. Even when the new owner does not need advice, we love hearing Singer tales!
